Why your website gets traffic but no enquiries

Most businesses don’t have a traffic problem. They have a clarity problem. Here’s how to find the leak, and fix it before you spend another pound on traffic.

Usually because visitors can’t tell, quickly enough, what you do, why you’re the safe choice and what to do next.

Fix those three things before you spend another pound on SEO or Google Ads. Otherwise you’re paying to send people to a website that lets them leave.

The £2 click

You pay £2 for a click. Someone lands on your website, has a browse and... leaves.

Multiply that by a month of ads and it adds up fast. More traffic won’t fix it. Most businesses don’t have a traffic problem. They have a clarity problem.

You’ve got about five seconds

Think about the person visiting your website. They’ve got a hundred other things going on: have I fed the cat, have I picked the kids up from school? You might get five seconds, maybe thirty, on your homepage.

That homepage is your Oxford Street shop window. In those few seconds it needs to say exactly what you do, how it helps them and what to do next. Their problem, not your history.

Seven reasons visitors leave without getting in touch

  • It isn’t clear what you do. Clever headlines and vague promises make people work too hard.
  • It’s about you, not them. Fluff about your passion and values, when they want to know if you can fix their problem.
  • There’s no proof. No reviews, no case studies, no real results. Visitors are comparing you with others, and trust decides it.
  • The next step is unclear. If it isn’t obvious what to do next, most people do nothing.
  • It’s too hard to get in touch. Long forms, a hidden phone number, or a contact page buried in the menu.
  • It’s slow or awkward on a phone. Most visitors are on their phones, and they won’t wait.
  • It’s the wrong traffic. If you rank or advertise for searches that don’t match what you sell, those visitors were never going to buy.

And sometimes the enquiries come, then go cold

Some websites do bring in enquiries, but they sit in an inbox until someone gets round to them. By then, the buyer has called someone else. Harvard Business Review found that firms replying within an hour were seven times more likely to qualify a lead than those who waited even an hour longer. Instant replies and follow-up fix that.

How to find your leak

  • Look at where people land and where they leave. Your analytics will show you the pages that lose people.
  • Watch real visits. Free tools like Microsoft Clarity let you watch recordings of people using your website. It’s eye-opening.
  • Ask your last five customers why they chose you, and what nearly put them off.
  • Test it on your phone, as if you’d never heard of yourself.

Fix the leak, then turn up the tap

Before spending any more on marketing, make sure the people you’re paying to bring in are flowing through: a good experience, clear calls to action and an obvious next step. Then more traffic means more work.
