Ask what they’ll do each month, how they’ll measure success in enquiries, and how they handle AI search. Then ask to see it working for a business like yours.

Here are the eight questions we’d ask, and what a good answer sounds like.

What will you actually do each month? A good answer is specific: pages, fixes, content, links and reviews. Not “optimisation”.
How will we measure success? Enquiries and revenue first. Rankings and traffic are useful, but they’re not the goal.
Can I see results for a business like mine? Real numbers, real clients and ideally someone you can speak to.
How do you handle AI search? More buyers now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI. If they haven’t got an answer, that’s an answer.
Who will do the work? The person on the sales call, or someone you’ll never meet?
What do you need from me? Good SEO needs your knowledge. Be wary of anyone who says “nothing”.
What happens if it isn’t working? Look for a short initial commitment and an honest review point, not a long lock-in.
What will your reports show? Plain English, linked to enquiries, with what’s next.

The biggest red flag
